Our Founder and Spiritual Father
The Most Reverend Joseph, born Igor
Hrebinka, was born on July 6, 1932.
After coming to America, he received his BA at Syracuse
University. He went
on to receive his Bachelor of Theology degree at the Holy Trinity
Seminary in Jordanville, NY. Later
in life, he also received a Masters degree in Mathematics at State
University at Oneonta, another one from State University at Albany, and
another BA in Computer Sciences at the College of Technology in New
York City, NY.
Bishop Joseph was ordained by
Metropolitan Philaret into the diaconate in 1967 and priesthood in 1969. He served for 33 years as
the rector of the Church of St. John of Kronstadt in Utica, NY, where
he helped to build the new church and greatly enrich the parish life. He also served as the
Senior Vice-President of the St. John of Kronstadt Fund for almost 25
years. From his
Utica parish, Bishop Joseph also helped serve at the Church of St.
Nicholas in Springfield, MA, for almost 3 years.
Bishop Joseph was a teacher of mathematics and computer
science for many years in New York State.
After retiring, he moved to the Washington, D.C. area to
live with his son.
At the Vth All-Diaspora Council, held
in Nanuet, NY, on November 18-21, the newly-formed ROCA Synod of
Bishops elected to elevate then Fr. Igor to the office of Vicar Bishop
of Washington, D.C. He
was tonsured on November 20, 2008, and made a bishop on November 20,
2008.
Though now retired his wisdom and experience continue to benefit parishioners and visitors alike.
