Holy Ascension Orthodox Church was founded
on May 17, 2007, under Fr. Igor Hrebinka, and is a parish
serving the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia area. We are a parish of the Russian
Orthodox Church Abroad, under the omofor his Eminence Metropolitan
Agafangel of Eastern America and New York, first hierarch of the Russian
Orthodox Church Abroad.
At the Vth All-Diaspora Council, held in
Nanuet, NY, on November 18-21, the newly-formed ROCA Synod of Bishops
elected to elevate then Fr. Igor to the office of Vicar Bishop of
Washington, D.C. He
was tonsured on November 20, 2008, and given the name Joseph
in honor of the Holy New Martyr St. Joseph of Petrograd and made a
bishop on November 20, 2008.
The parish seeks to maintain the traditions
of the historic Orthodox Church of Russia, as well as the Russian
Orthodox Church Abroad, as exemplified by the church’s founding
hierarchs: Metropolitans Anthony, Anastasiy, Philaret and Vitaliy.
